As far as conferences go there's generally only a few academic ones which I've enjoyed in the past and then all the small vendor ones (see http://scissec.scis.ecu.edu.au/conferences2007/). We had a five day layover and we all had a great time. We actually spent most of our time in Fremantle where the Sail and Anchor actually is located. We did go into Perth for some of the clubs but Fremantle is so laid back it served us just fine. Reminds me a lot of Santa Cruz, California and Corpus Christi, Texas.
